The good news is that we have ammo for all of our training courses. Hopefully ammunition availability will be better for the rest of 2013, we were very grateful to get a shipment just in time for our 2013 classes.

If you are looking for training June and July are two great months here at Gunsite. Remember when it hits 100 in Phoenix it is only 85 at Gunsite. There are still openings in our July 250 Pistol and 223 Carbine classes. Are you a graduate of 250 and ready to take your skill and training to the next level? If you are then the 350 pistol class is what you need.

Follow up either the 250or 350 course with a weekend of pocket pistol June 15-16. Many of us tend to carry these small easily concealed pistols and revolvers in the warmer summer months. This is a great opportunity to learn how to make the most of these summer time small carry guns. June also offers our Close Quarter Pistol course. This is a real world orientated class that focuses on the realities of interpersonal violent confrontations. You will learn practical, proven methods to deal with the type of situations you are most likely to face.

You can follow the CQP class with a weekend of edged weapons training. Edged weapons are everywhere. Understanding their use gives you an invaluable skill that is applicable in more situations than a handgun due to their commonality. Rounding out our June pistol offerings is Team Tactics for Two. We have room for one more couple in this very popular class.

Asa Hutchinson, Director National School Shield Task Force, April 2, 2013

http://www.nraschoolshield.com

What more can we do as a nation to improve the safety of our children at school? This
was the question raised by the National Rifle Association (NRA) after the Sandy Hook
tragedy in which twenty young lives were taken along with the lives of six devoted
school staff.1
The posing of this question led to the assembly of a team of recognized experts in
homeland security, law-enforcement training and school safety to conduct a survey of
selected schools and their current security standards. This review has been conducted
without any preconceived conclusions or mandate from the NRA except to determine
what is needed to save young lives. The NRA has fully honored its commitment to
respect the independence of this task force and to fund its work.
There are many experts in school safety. Some are self-proclaimed experts and others
are nationally recognized leaders and innovators. The group of experts assembled for
the National School Shield (NSS) Task Force is a selection of the most experienced and
respected security experts; however, it is recognized that there are many others who
have written, worked and contributed in the arena of school safety. While our report
studied and reviewed the work of many in the field, our purpose was to bring together
experts with different security backgrounds to provide a fresh perspective to the
challenge of school violence. It is our hope that as the NSS continues into the future, the
contribution and support for this initiative by school safety experts will expand.
Members of the task force include:
Ralph Basham, Former Director of U.S. Secret Service, Former Commissioner of U.S. Customs
and Border Protection, Former Director of Federal Law Enforcement Training Center
Col. (ret.) John Quattrone, U.S. Air Force Security Forces Officer, three-time
Commander, Former Joint Staff Operations Antiterrorism/Homeland Defense Directorate,
the Pentagon
Tony Lambraia, CEO of Phoenix RBT Solutions
Bruce Bowen, Former Deputy Director of U.S. Secret Service, Former Assistant Director of
Federal Law Enforcement Training Center
Thomas Dinanno, Former Deputy Assistant Secretary for Critical Infrastructure Protection,
U.S. Department of Homeland Security
Robert Lambraia, Director of Training of Phoenix RBT Solutions
Joe Overstreet, Former U.S. Secret Service Special Agent, Law Enforcement Training Manager

Classes at Gunsite are in full swing for spring. Even though the rest of the country is unhappy with the famous Pennsylvania groundhog for fraudulently predicting an early spring, here in the desert highlands of Arizona the weather is great.

Gunsite was a popular destination for ‘spring break’ 2013. Several families and friends scheduled 3 day pistol classes for parents and children. The first day of class proved stressful as the young adults especially the females expressed their opinion of spending spring break at a gun camp with their parents. No bikini tops and a bad farmer tan was not their idea of a break.

It is amazing the influence a Gunsite Instructor has over young people. By the end of their three day class high fives abounded. Competition took over, sleeves rolled up and the shoot-off proved to be a family bonding experience. There is no greater joy than watching families bond while learning to defend themselves and their loved ones. The shooting sports can be a great family outing.

March proved to be extremely busy, getting us ready for April, our favorite month for training. The Indiana 150 three day pistol class April 19-21 has openings. This class is hosted by Sheriff Ken Campbell at the Boone County Sheriffs Range in Lebanon Indiana.

If you live in the Tennessee area and have taken a 250 Pistol class, Gunsite is offering a 350 Intermediate Pistol class held at the Franklin Police Department range April 8-12.

Advanced Carbine 556 April 8-12 has openings. 556 is the most exciting and rewarding carbine class in the world. This Gunsite Experience has been renowned by combat veterans from every theatre of U.S. operations in the last 35 years. 556 is the course for those who will settle for no less than being the master of the carbine.

Extreme Long Range is offered April 22-25. This course examines the techniques and equipment required to engage targets from 1000 to 2000 meters. The classroom sessions cover the fine details of ballistics, methods of accurate range finding, selection of ammunition and configuration of ballistic software.

Precision Rifle Urban April 29-May 3rd also has openings. It is a five day class utilizing the precision optically sighted rifle in the urban environment. Emphasis is on extreme precision at moderate to short ranges (0-400).

The 250 Pistol in May 13-17 has a few openings available as well as 499 Advanced Pistol May 20-24. The Carbine 223 class May 13-17 also has a few availabilities.

If you are shopping for a S&W pistol or an AR15 Sport Utility Rifle contact Susan in the ProShop. She also has a few Glock 19 Gen 4’s available and of course the Colt Gunsite 1911 in blue and stainless.

Stay vigilant, keep up with the news and never let your guard down. Stand strong for our Second Amendment Rights.

As always, take a youngster out to shoot.

Following along with an Internet disagreement between Caleb Giddings – an associate of mine who I think does a good job of reaching out to the younger shooters in our community through his Gun Nuts Media site – and a rather new firearms training academy got me to thinking. Firearms training should be simple mostly because firearms are simple tools.

(If you are into Internet arguments you can check this one out HERE. It’s good for a laugh or at least a grin.)

Just because you may never have received any good firearms training does not mean that good firearms training is exceedingly difficult or that it is similar to the dissemination of deeply guarded secrets only Navy Seals and super ninjas are privy to. Actually, good firearms training with a handgun or a rifle has nothing to do with secrets. It is merely the explanation, demonstration and critique of basic facts and fundamentals.

Where things get difficult is finding someone who can effectively explain, demonstrate and critique. And, tailor those explanations, demonstrations and critiques to the student. Instructors, who puff out their chest, wear tight shirts and regale you with tales of shooting terrorists or criminals will only be effective training a small portion of the shooting public. A good firearms instructor does not have to be cool or meaner than a striped snake; they need to be a good teacher.

LAS VEGAS — Nevada officials say they’re no longer recognizing concealed weapons permits from Arizona after the state relaxed some of its training requirements.

The decision takes effect this week, after a unanimous vote last Thursday from the Nevada Sheriffs’ and Chiefs’ association.

Association officials say Las Vegas firearm instructors first notified them about the changes in the training requirements.

Nevada Department of Public Safety officials say they contacted the Arizona Department of Public Safety and confirmed changes were made in 2010 and 2011.

Those include adjustments to the minimum training requirements, and the elimination of statutory marksmanship and judgmental shooting requirements.

Association officials say the requirements are now too different from Nevada’s for the state to recognize the permits.

Arizona public safety officials didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Spring is beginning to spring. We have even seen a few reptiles out already. Web traffic is up, FB traffic is up, phone inquiries are up, registrations are up, family participation is up and independent women participation is definitely up.

2013 is off to an incredible start. We are optimistic about our entire industry. We are fearful for our country, but cautiously optimistic about the posture of our countrymen.

This month on the 23rd, 238 years ago in St Johns Church, Richmond, VA, my good friend and fellow traveler, Patrick Henry made his historic presentation. Henry presented a proposal to organize a volunteer company of cavalry or infantry in every Virginia County. By custom, Henry addressed himself to the Convention’s president, Peyton Randolph of Williamsburg. Henry’s words were not transcribed, but no one who heard them forgot their eloquence, or Henry’s closing words: “Give me liberty, or give me death!” Sage advice in similar times.

I mentioned we are getting busy again so here is a quick recap of openings in the next couple of months. March is working at max capacity in the carbine and pistol classes, except for the Pistol AT class which has a couple of openings for the 27th thru the 29th. Call Dave today to get in here, perfect training weather for this challenging regimen.

Looking a bit farther out, we have plenty of room in the April 29th 250 class so grab the phone and call Karen , openings will go quickly with this letter out. We have room for one more couple in the Team Tactics class April 29th as well, so get hot on this. This is the class requested for years for couples to learn to work together in a defensive situation. This class is a tremendous success and limited to 6 couples.

Our spring shotgun classes are full, we want to do some more of these like our colorful, brilliant, charming vice president advises. So ring up our folks and tell them you are taking the Vice Presidents advice on the best home defense weapon and the dates you want the class.

The 270 General Rifle Class , the Ladies Pistol and the Intermediate Carbine classes in April have a few openings. The Precision Rifle Urban and the Extreme Long Range Rifle have a few openings as well.

WE HAVE AMMUNITION FOR CLIENTS IN CLASSES

March 2013 finds America in a politically inflamed environment. The Government is threatening more laws, more bans and restrictions and at the same time they are buying all the ammunition. Requiring 99% who are law abiding to jump through hoops in order to try and keep the 1% who are dangerous from acquiring firearms has always been a losing proposition. It has always been a path meant to end with registration so as to enable confiscation.

Regardless of what happens with their background checks or their bans and restrictions, our 2nd Ammendment Rights are strong and the NRA and other lobbying forces are working hard for our freedoms. Stay informed and let your legislators know your voice.

As usual, take a youngster out to shoot today. Teach our children well.

Buz
