Emergency Medical Response
The EMR is taught by an Emergency Medicine physician and former military Medic. They use
their experience of multiple combat tours to teach the latest guidelines for care of injuries and
illnesses in the field. The three day class covers the most common injuries and illnesses that
can be cared for by those with no prior medical knowledge, including hands on training for
closing wounds and treating injuries with improvised materials. Other lectures study past mass
casualty events, terrorist attacks, and natural disasters and discuss skills and techniques for
survival. Scenario training based on previous events provides the opportunity to apply medical
tactics and mindset under realistic and stressful conditions.
This class uses simulated firearms during the scenarios so that no prerequisite training is
required. While there are no requirements for a medical background, lay students, physicians,
nurses, and paramedics who have taken this training all describe it as a unique and useful
