Gunsite offers training in defensive Pistol, Carbine, Shotgun, Rifle and Edged Weapons as well as hunting classes and defensive vehicle classes. We have 22 purpose built ranges. The five indoor simulators make your training even more realistic as you take what you learn on the square ranges and put those teachings into a real life scenario. The five outdoor simulators add an even more rounded training experience. Our 3D life like animal targets in our hunting simulators give you the experience of being on an African Safari or a sheep hunt in New Zealand. No other facility in the world will give you training like Gunsite Academy.
June Gunsite Newsletter
My agenda for this morning was to write the June Gunsite Newsletter and wax on eloquently about Memorial Day and how we need to remember the sacrifices of all our veterans these last 200+ years. Then discuss the many training opportunities we have across the country and the happenings at the Gunsite Ranch. However, another Terrorist incident in Europe is at the forefront of my thoughts. We could also throw in Mind Set training and again discuss the Principles of Personal Defense book (from last month’s column). Posting memes of the British Flag with kind words, offering thoughts and … [Read more...]
Lessons for the Carry Life
“Carry Life” finds a curious parallel between our week and the opening of the XXXI Olympiad. We’ll see performances over the next 16 days that defy explanation, an always-amazing amalgam of aptitude and ferocious dedication coached, cajoled and occasionally bullied into greatness. The athletes will indeed seem superhuman, and a fanciful notion that perhaps they have descended Mt. Olympus to entertain us, or deserve to be elevated there, will not seem farfetched. After a week at the Paulden, Ariz., Gunsite Academy, our perception is much the same—we’ve gotten a look at something very special … [Read more...]
CIVILIAN COUNTER-TERROR/RESPONSE TO ACTIVE SHOOTER
During the week of May 16 through 20, we presented the second evolution of the Gunsite CIVILIAN COUNTER-TERROR/RESPONSE TO ACTIVE SHOOTER class. Eight students, all with previous Gunsite experience, attended the event. This evolution included a number of refinements decided on during the March CCTRAS class. The class is intended to provide students with the information and skills necessary to manage a critical incident related to an active killer/mass attack event. In addition, the class provides information on international and domestic terror groups. The information regarding terror … [Read more...]

Gunsite Zombie Drill
There are a handful of places in this world where I feel truly content. At home with my wife and kids. In a tree stand in the fall woods as dawn approaches. On a sailboat ripping through small waves on a steady salt breeze… and in the high desert of Paulden, Arizona, at Gunsite Academy. Last week I took part in the inaugural Defense Against Street Crimes course, one of several new specialized classes that have been under development at Gunsite Academy to help students adapt to a changing threat environment. I’ll be talking more about the class over the course of the next week as I … [Read more...]
What To Do When Your Pistol Doesn’t Fire
There you are practicing at the range, committed to your marksmanship basics, peering intently at the front sight as you control your trigger press....anddddd.....CLICK. How can this be? You've done everything right. You're shooting factory loaded ammunition. Your firearm is squeaky clean and minty fresh. Get over it. In fact, accept it. As with any mechanical device, things can go wrong with your pistol, and they will. Your acceptance of this will allow you to stay calm and fix the issue to your best ability. Your job is to know which problems you can solve-and how. That click you … [Read more...]
Gunfighting is a Thinking Man’s Game
From a post by Bob Owens of BearingArms.com I just stumbled across a video of a Gunsite Academy client—quite obviously, a member of the U.S. military—running through one of the shoothouses in the 223 Carbine Class. Roughly the first have of the video is the student’s run through the shoothouse, and that’s followed by the most important part for the student, the instructor’s critique. It’s here where you discover just how badly you’ve screwed up. You learn from “dying” here (often repeatedly) so you don’t end up dying in the real world when it matters. This serviceman was “killed” by … [Read more...]
Why I’m Thankful for Gunsite
To the Gunsite family, As I’m sure you all know, the State of Israel is currently being bombarded with rockets launched by Hamas from the Gaza Strip. On an almost hourly basis, sirens sound in various locations throughout the country alerting residents of an impending strike so that they can quickly get to the nearest shelter or take cover behind sturdy objects if shelters are out of reach. As you can imagine, this type of environment can have severe effects on one’s psychological well-being, leading to feelings of vulnerability, anxiety, and panic. This is especially true for those of us … [Read more...]

Fear the Donga
This article contributed by Bob Owens of Bearing Arms. It’s relatively easy to build up a false sense of confidence in your defensive firearm skills on a square range shooting at stationary targets from a fixed position. Things get a bit more interesting, however, when we start incorporating movement, and encountering targets hidden in rugged real-world terrain. At the Gunsite Academy 350 Intermediate Pistol course we had the opportunity to put our skills to the test not just on square range, but in indoor simulators both during the day and at night, in force-on-force training against … [Read more...]
Defensive Vehicle Class Paid Off
After spending a week at Gunsite Academy for the Alumni Shoot and a five-day class, I was heading home tired but happy. I pulled off the interstate at a truck stop to get a cup of coffee and find my iPad (gotta have music to keep me awake.) Because I needed to open car doors to rummage through my gear, I parked nose-in at the side of the main building where there was space and no activity. Behind my car was a large open paved area with no vehicles. It was morning and I casually scanned the area as I went through my gear. I mean, after a week at Gunsite who would not be in condition … [Read more...]
Back to Gunfighter School – 350 Pistol
This article posted on the Bearing Arms website by Bob Owens. Gunsite Academy has been dubbed the “Harvard of Handguns,” and with good reason. Founded by Col. Jeff Cooper as the American Pistol Institute in 1976 to teach the Modern Technique of the Pistol, this shooting school in the high desert outside Paulden, Arizona is home to a cadre of incredibly-talented firearms instructors. Gunsite teaches everyone from first-time shooters, to hard-core competitors, to law enforcement and military special operations forces… and even royalty. Gunsite’s signature course is 250 Pistol, which for … [Read more...]

Death in the Office
Force on Force training at Gunsite. There are over 100 million Americans gun owners, and of those, there are almost 13 million with concealed carry permits. Many others practice open carry, and/or live in a state where permitting is not required. While not everyone who has the option to carry a firearm with them in their daily lives opts to do so all the time for a wide range of reasons, it is probably reasonable to suggest that on any given day there are probably at least a million lawfully-armed citizens walking down our streets with a firearm in their possession. Gunsite Battle Rifle Course
by Robert Shimizu Anticipation. Coffee steams in my cup as the dawn sky ranges from gray to purple, resolving in a magenta line on the mountain horizon backed by an azure blue. It’s morning in the Sonoran Desert of Arizona. As I roll north to Gunsite’s Battle Rifle class, the sun warms the prairie as antelope bed down. Gunsite’s Battle Rifle is a study of the .30 caliber semi-automatic Main Battle Rifle, and its proper employment in armed conflict. Compared to the 5.56x45 round, the 7.62x51 NATO round packs a heavier punch, offers greater effective range, is less prone to drifting … [Read more...]

This is the class picture of the first ever two day ladies shotgun class at Gunsite taught by Rangemistress Il Ling New. These women were in our Ladies 250 Pistol class in October and they had so much fun they wanted to come back. During the pistol class they talked about shotguns being the best home defense weapon. For Christmas they all got shotguns and guess what? They put this class together as soon as the weather permitted. Most of the women were shooting 870 Pump Action 12 and 20 gauge tactical shotguns! The ages of these women went from the early thirties to … [Read more...]
