Hard to believe it is Holy Week and Easter is upon us. Time literally flies here at Gunsite with all the classes going on. Almost all the 250 Pistol classes between now and November have doubled. (Well, except for end of May and it has tripled.) Pistol Caliber Carbine, Close Quarters Pistol, Precision Rifle 7 (PR7) and Gun Stories are here this week. The Dog Days of Summer July has been a hot one and Gunsite finished July like a firecracker! Turmoil continues across the Republic. Gun sales (if you can find them and ammunition) are at record levels. Have you made this an opportunity to help your family, friends, and neighbors? More and more liberals are recognizing that they just might appreciate the Second Amendment after all. Do not let this be a divisive moment with these folks. Tessa Wyrick, a graduate of many pistol, carbine, shotgun, and rifle classes and whom is also a guest instructor for PR7 and XLR has again demonstrated that the tactics and techniques she has learned at Gunsite has put her on the top. Tessa’s mastery of ballistic calculations and wind reading lead her to winning the 1.6 Mile Challenge Match held at the NRA Whittington Center in Raton, NM 29-30 June. As graduates of the Gunsite precision rifle courses know, the spotter is the most important member of the shooting team. Q&A with Dave Hartman, Director of Training at Gunsite Academy
Article by Scott Gara from guns.com May 29, 2020 Dave Hartman has over 30 years of dedicated service to this country through the Marine Corps and the Orange County Sheriff’s office. It was a natural fit to move from training police officers to training a wide mixture of people at Gunsite Academy in Paulden, AZ. For the past 5 years, he has worked as the Director of Training for the famed firearms training institute. We caught up with Hartman to talk about Lt. Col. Shoot Like A Girl Brings on Gunsite Alumni Christa Forrester
Gunsite Academy is proud of Gunsite Alumni Christa Forrester. Here is what Christa wrote about her experience at Gunsite. I can remember the day the envelope came in the mail. It was a day like any other day and the mail from the PO Box sat in the seat next to me. It stayed there for a few hours until I had the opportunity to open it. Inside was a Gunsite calendar and a letter from the Jeff Cooper Legacy Foundation that I had been accepted to the Gunsite 250 class through the scholarship program. I was giddy, excited and couldn’t wait to share the news with my husband. I am not sure … [Read more...]

This is a great article written for the USPSA Magazine by Mike Foley, President of USPSA. If you ever find yourself in a position to train at Gunsite, don’t hesitate to go. If you think you don’t need training like this, and carry a pistol, I urge you to go. If you think it is too basic for you, I dare you to go. Over the years, I’ve heard people say things like “they are stuck in 1976…” or “they only teach the Weaver stance…” or “that’s just a basic course…”. I can report that none of this is true. In retrospect, none of the people who said that to me have taken a class there, and I now … [Read more...]

How I See It
I'll never forget my college sociology professor, Dr. Cooper, who once said there were two kinds of bipeds (folks); homo sapiens and human beings. Human beings were also homo sapiens, but not necessarily visa versa. As Dr. Cooper explained it, a homo sapien is a product of fornication, whereas a human being is a product of a culture of love, nurturing, family ties, a religious upbringing, education and etc., a process requiring years and perhaps a lifetime of reinforcement. A true human being cares about other human beings and even about homo sapiens. After a certain age a mere homo sapien … [Read more...]

Jeff Cooper and Gunsite Academy – 40 Years of Freedom
This article by Frank Winn writing for America's First Freedom. If you consider only the lowest-hanging fruit, there are still about six ways to come at an “Exercise Your Freedom” column about Gunsite Academy. Choosing the most proximate topic, you’d have to observe how close to the 40th anniversary of the original school of “The Modern Technique” of pistol craft we are. The first week in October will mark the actual occasion, but don’t gloss over those 40 years: No other remotely similar institution comes close to that longevity, or the pervasiveness of its influence. Jeff Cooper — The Founding Father of Firearms Martial Arts
Although you may have never considered it, the use of the defensive handgun is a martial art. Martial arts are the codified systems and traditions of combat practices. The term is derived from Latin and means “arts of Mars,” the Roman god of war. The handgun evolved into a true fighting tool about the time of the American Civil War, but it would be another hundred years before anyone truly elevated its application to true martial art status. That man was Jeff Cooper. Jeff Cooper was a Stanford graduate and a Marine Corps officer who served in WWII and in the Korean War. Between 1957 and 1976, … [Read more...]

Battle Sabre: As you know, the British subject is effectively forbidden the use of firearms in defense of his life. So now we read in the English press of one retired army officer who overcame this problem by repelling boarders with his sword. When three goblins broke into his house with knives, he produced his regimental sabre and gave battle. He ran those birds out of his house and well down the street, though the account does not say that he damaged any of them severely. Swordsmanship is effectively a lost art, but I doubt if the world’s miscreants are fully aware of that. - See more at: … [Read more...]

He aims and a red laser beam cuts through the dusky-lighted gun room. Rifles hang on the knotty-pine paneling, walnut stocks gleaming. Think about how far lasers have come since 1981. Two handed Weaver stance, flash=sight technique, "kinesthetic" presentation - an approach that makes "this fairly inefficient hand weapon" an effective instrument. In terms of learning objectives, the goal of the general pistol course is to "place a student in command of an environment," Cooper explained. "That's it - he controls. From a post by Bob Owens of BearingArms.com I just stumbled across a video of a Gunsite Academy client—quite obviously, a member of the U.S. military—running through one of the shoothouses in the 223 Carbine Class. Roughly the first have of the video is the student’s run through the shoothouse, and that’s followed by the most important part for the student, the instructor’s critique. It’s here where you discover just how badly you’ve screwed up. You learn from “dying” here (often repeatedly) so you don’t end up dying in the real world when it matters. Shooting in the Desert
The basic safety rules for shooting are: Treat every gun as if it were loaded. Always point the muzzle in a safe direction. Be sure of your target and what is beyond. Keep your finger outside the trigger guard until ready to shoot. Regardless of where you shoot, these rules remain constant. But if you’re shooting in the desert at a competition, training school or just shooting rocks, you also have to consider the constant threat of dehydration and the nasty sunburns caused by not having enough protection from the sun. Searing summer temperatures, dry air and the lack of shade … [Read more...]
