ANOTHER BIG MONTH AHEAD
Flag Day, Father’s Day, Summer Solstice . . . then Independence Day.
The Magna Carta was signed in June 1215. This document is exceptional as it established early principles of due process, rule of law and democracy. (And mentions the Office of Sheriff . . .)
D-Day . . . Operation Overlord began in Normandy June 6 and was so important to the beginning of the liberation of Europe. The Greatest Generation . . .
The summer will begin to fly by before we know it.
At Gunsite, it is still one of the grand weather months, usually with cool mornings and warm afternoons with little humidity. God’s cooling system works here with 10% humidity. Perspire and it evaporates. Get a wet cloth on you and the moisture evaporates, cooling you. But you must have water input to exceed your output!
This last week, we had a young man in his 250 class. It is a bucket list for him to attend. However, he has some significant health challenges. The left ventricle of his heart was attacked by a virus about 5-6 years ago and is failing and he had suffered a stroke. A heart transplant is in his future and he awaits. He wears a pack to stimulate and support his heart.
Monday afternoon, despite his intake of water, the dehydration got to him, and he had to self-select out of the class. We had him in the Office, cooling him off, getting more fluids (and popsicles) on board. We visited and he began to decline so we called EMS and instituted our Man Down Procedure. While we awaited arrival, he and I talked. I also had the pleasure of visiting on the telephone with his Mom in SE Arizona.
The big take-away for me was the positive attitude his mom conveyed to him on the phone (and his dad the same the next day when we met) but more importantly was his comment.
“I have to live my life.”
What an attitude for a seriously ill 25-year-old man who has been awaiting a heart transplant for a few years and lives daily with serious medical issues.
I learned from him that afternoon and have tried to re-adjust my life attitude.
Gunsite teaches and preaches Mind Set . . . This young man truly lives it.
I spoke with him on the telephone today as he is home and back to “his normal.” We look forward to him returning to another 250 Class once he gets that new heart. We shall keep the Gunsite Family apprised. Prayers are appreciated.
Mind Set – Violence continues across the Republic and the world. Remember that you are your First Responder. While law enforcement will do what they can, you will be there first. The “No Firearms Allowed” signage will not protect you from the armed miscreants.
Practice the Principles of Personal Defense and the Color Code. Continue to use them each day and refine your skill. Reread the book!
Go armed as often as you can. Carry a reload. Carry a flashlight. Carry some sort of Individual First Aid Kit.
Practice and practice and then practice more.
Dry fire is good . . . Live fire is better.
Practice from concealment.
Train with your family. (There is room in the Youth 250 Pistol the end of July!)
Train communication with your family.
At home, in public, on the cell phone.
Have an emergency communication plan.
Have a home defense plan.
Depending upon where you live, you probably have a tornado drill, storm drill, earthquake drill . . .
Practice your home defense plan.
Have an “in-public” plan.
Practice your “in-public” plan with all the family.
Have a plan for yourself at your workplace.
Again, YOU are your First Responder.
Plan Accordingly.
DVC,
Ken
